Understanding Care
What is Palliative Care ?
Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual.( WHO)
This approach addresses not only physical symptoms but also emotional, psychological, and spiritual support, ensuring holistic care for patients. It involves a team of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapist, counsellors and social workers, who work together to provide comprehensive care that meets the individual needs of the patient.

Palliative care is suitable for people with chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart failure, respiratory diseases, and neurological conditions. It can be provided alongside curative treatments and is not limited to end-of-life care. This means it can be introduced at any stage of illness, providing patients with the comfort and support they need while managing their symptoms effectively.

By offering compassionate care and empowering patients and families to make informed decisions, palliative care ensures that individuals live as comfortably and fully as possible during their illness.
What is Hospice Care?
Hospice care is a specialized type of care focused on providing comfort, dignity, and quality of life for individuals in the final stages of a serious illness. Unlike curative treatments that aim to extend life, hospice care focuses on ensuring that patients live their final days as comfortably as possible, managing symptoms like pain, breathlessness, and anxiety.
The goal of hospice care is not to cure the illness but to offer comfort, alleviate suffering, and support the family during this difficult time.
It can be delivered at home, in hospice centers, or in long-term care facilities, based on the patient’s needs and preferences.
While palliative care can be introduced at any stage of a serious illness and works alongside curative treatments, hospice care is designed specifically for those who are no longer pursuing life-extending treatments and are focused on comfort in the last phase of life. Both approaches emphasize holistic care, addressing not only physical symptoms but also emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, ensuring that patients and their families receive the support they need.
